KCSDV POSITIONS
Position: Communications Coordinator
Responsible To: Executive Director
Primary Responsibilities:
To generate awareness about the issues of domestic and sexual violence, KCSDV, and member programs through the development of annual media plans and the implementation of a targeted public awareness campaign in Kansas.
Specific Duties:
- Develop and implement a public relations plan to create awareness about KCSDV, its member programs and issues around sexual and domestic violence
- Produce and disseminate public awareness materials for member programs with a particular focus on SAAM (April) and DVAM (October)
- Develop and manage a media plan for KCSDV, including development of media resources for member programs
- Provide technical assistance to KCSDV executive director, management team, and member programs with regard to media response and campaigns
- Produce and distribute media responses to current events as necessary
- Work in conjunction with the executive director et al to produce and distribute media messaging related to legislative initiatives of KCSDV
- Produce and distribute the KCSDV newsletter 4 times quarterly
- Support fundraising activities with public relations and media materials
- Other tasks as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:
A minimum of a baccalaureate degree in journalism and one to two years experience in media or public relations; excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as demonstrated skills in media and public relations, and events organizing; demonstrated knowledge, commitment and understanding of sexual and domestic violence advocacy in a socio-political context; a mastery of AP style; strong copy, grammar, and proof reading skills; computer proficiency in Microsoft programs and desktop publishing software. Must be able to lift and carry 20-30 lbs.

Sanctuary for Families is New York’s largest nonprofit agency exclusively dedicated to serving the clinical, economic, legal, and shelter needs of domestic violence victims and their children. We offer a comprehensive, interconnected range of services including crisis and transitional housing, individual and group counseling, legal services, housing and benefits assistance, a mentoring program, and a specialized program for children who have witnessed or experienced abuse. Sanctuary for Families envisions a society in which freedom from domestic violence is a basic human right.
Description:
The CAP Supervising attorney trains and supervises legal advocates who assist domestic violence victims seeking orders of protection in Family Court. The attorney provides comprehensive, compassionate, holistic legal services to victims of gender-based violence through direct representation, community education and outreach, and policy and systems-change advocacy. The attorney’s duties include:
- Training and supervising 30 students each semester and 40 summer associates each summer who advocate for petitioners seeking orders of protection in Family Court.
- Representing victims of domestic violence in Family and Supreme Court and in the Integrated Domestic Violence Court (IDVC) in cases including: orders of protection, custody, visitation, child support, spousal support, and matrimonial matters.
- Conducting recruiting presentations at law firms.
- Organizing community efforts to effect policy initiatives and systems changes that benefit domestic violence victims.
Qualifications:
- JD degree and admission to the NYS Bar required;
- Foreign language, particularly Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Korean, Mandarin, or Cantonese preferable;
- Ability to work independently;
- Ability to multitask and balance complicated cases;
- Ability to cooperate well with diverse people and institutions;
- Strong public speaking skills;
- Experience working with domestic violence, trauma survivors or low-income immigrant clients preferred;
- Knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence
