Part of 2nd Annual Safe Homes, Safe Streets Awareness Day and Reception
Topeka, Kan. - Nearly seven out of ten Kansan adults killed in domestic violence homicides between 1999 and 2003 were women,1 and this disturbing statistic will be on display this Thursday at the Kansas Capitol.
The Silent Witness Exhibit tells the stories of Kansas women who have been murdered by their husband, ex-husband, or intimate partner.
The group of red life-size silhouettes will be displayed from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on the 2nd floor rotunda. Each witness has a unique story displayed on her silhouette.
The exhibit is one of many displays and activities that are part of the 2nd Annual Safe Homes, Safe Streets Awareness Day and Reception, organized by the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence (KCSDV).
Locally, the exhibit was developed by the Greater Kansas City Section of the National Council of Jewish Women in cooperation with Safehome, Johnson County's domestic violence shelter, and KCSDV.
The exhibit can also be viewed at the 6:00 p.m. Safe Homes, Safe Streets reception at the Ramada Inn, 420 SE 6th Avenue, Topeka.
KCSDV is a statewide network of 30 domestic violence and/or sexual assault advocacy programs. KCSDV's member programs provide support and safety to the victims of domestic and sexual violence and stalking through direct services.
