A Snapshot: Domestic and Sexual Violence in the News
The following items are a few of the articles relating to sexual and
domestic violence that appeared in Kansas newspapers in 2007.
1/5/07 Cowley County: A woman, 19, disappears and is later found murdered. A man, 23, who had been stalking her was charged with capital murder, rape, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated sodomy.
1/7/07 Geary County: A woman, 28, is found stabbed to death in her home. Later her husband pleads no contest to premeditated first-degree murder.
1/11/07 Barton County: A woman, 31, dies of multiple stab wounds to her throat and chest. Her common-law husband is later charged with her murder and sentenced to six years in prison.
3/13/07 Pratt County: A man, 21, is arrested on charges of rape against two women he knew.
3/28/07 Franklin County: A man, 48, is charged with rape and criminal sodomy against his 36-year-old wife.
3/30/07 Crawford County: A man is found guilty of two counts of rape against a woman he had just met.
5/5/07 Ford County: A woman, 31, is found shot to death in her home. Later her ex-boyfriend, 33, is charged with second-degree murder.
5/16/07 Clay County: A man, 23, is arrested for raping a 27-year-old female acquaintance.
6/2/07 KC: A Wyandotte County woman, 25, is found dead by her son. The woman was staying at her mother’s apartment in Missouri, in part to get away from her husband, 23, who was later charged with second-degree murder.
6/2/07 Johnson County: A woman, 19, is kidnapped from a store parking lot. A man, 27, is later charged with capital murder, rape, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated sodomy.
7/18/07 Sedgwick County: A man, 21, went to the home of his ex-girlfriend, 35, to kill her, but she wasn’t there so he opened fire and killed her daughter, 18, and her neighbor, 51. The man also critically injured the daughter’s friend, and injured two police officers who responded. He committed suicide after the incident.
8/20/07 Sedgwick County: A woman, 36, is found dead from multiple gunshot wounds at her home. Her husband is later charged with first-degree murder.
8/24/07 Sedgwick County: A jury finds a man, 34, guilty of murder, rape and aggravated arson in the death of a female friend, 31. Evidence showed that she was still alive when he set her on fire after stabbing her a dozen times.
11/21/07 Johnson County: A woman, 22, and her boyfriend, 25, are found shot to death at home. Police later conclude that the boyfriend murdered the woman and then committed suicide. Court records show that the he was due in court on domestic violence-related charges against her two weeks after the murder/suicide.
11/30/07 Woodson County: A woman, 18, is found murdered along a highway. A man, 24, is later charged with capital murder and rape.
