2nd Annual Safe Homes, Safe Streets:
Putting the Spotlight on Sexual Violence

Awareness Day and Reception
Thursday, February 10, 2005

Thursday marks the 2nd annual Safe Homes, Safe Streets Awareness Day and Reception: Putting the Spotlight on Sexual Violence which builds on the success of last year's event in which 300 attended.

"We want you, the Kansas legislators, to understand the reality of violence in the homes and streets of your own constituencies," said Sandy Barnett, Executive Director of KCSDV. "We want you to realize how many opportunities you have in your districts to make a difference."

KCSDV is a statewide network of domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy programs.

You as a legislator can expect a visit from your local domestic violence or sexual assault advocacy program Thursday afternoon. You'll receive information about the services which your local program provides.

You can also join us on the 2nd floor rotunda for the 11 a.m. press conference.

You're also invited to the 6 p.m. reception at the Grand Ballroom at the Ramada Inn. The keynote speaker is Don McPherson, former professional football player now working as a violence prevention educator who challenges men to take responsibility for inappropriate and abusive behavior.

"The fundamental push to my advocacy work is to address all forms of violence against women and to engage men in the dialogue," McPherson said. "As men we need to be a part of the dialogue confronting the culture of misogyny and sexism."
