KCSDV Holds Annual Prevention Training and 15th Annual Advocacy Day in Topeka on February 5 – 7

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence (KCSDV) will hold the 2018 KCSDV Prevention Summit on February 5-6, 2018 and the 15th annual KCSDV Advocacy Day at the Kansas Capitol on Feb. 7.

In conjunction with the 2018 KCSDV Prevention Summit (Prevention Summit) and KCSDV Advocacy Day (Advocacy Day), KCSDV invites all members of the public to the following events:

Art Installation Exhibition “What Were You Wearing?”
Feb. 5 at 12-5:30 p.m. and on Feb. 6 at 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Ramada Topeka Downtown Hotel and Convention Center

Silent Witness Dedication Ceremony, KCSDV Advocacy Day
Feb. 7 at 11 – 11:30 a.m.

PREVENTION SUMMIT

The Prevention Summit is a two-day sexual and domestic violence prevention training sponsored by Westar Energy and Blue Cross Blue Shield and will take place at Ramada Topeka Downtown Hotel and Convention Center (Ramada) in Topeka. The featured presenter is Rus Funk, a long-time promoter of healthy masculinity, equity, diversity, justice, and violence prevention. He co-founded the organization Men Can Stop Rape, Inc. in Washington, D.C.

“Having Rus Funk at this year’s prevention training will be extra special, considering all of the local, regional, national, and worldwide conversations about sexual and domestic violence and the part that men play in that conversation, prevention, and action,” said KCSDV Executive Director Joyce Grover. “The title for Rus’ presentation is Preventing for Social Change.”

KCSDV will hold an awards luncheon during the Prevention Summit to recognize sexual and domestic violence victim advocacy leaders in Kansas on Feb. 6 and will publicly announce the award winners after the awards are presented.

The widely known art installation exhibition “What Were You Wearing?” will be available for public viewing at the Ramada on Feb. 5 at 12 – 5:30 p.m. and on Feb. 6 at 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The installation was created by Jen Brockman and Dr. Mary Wyandt-Hiebert and has shown in places as far as Brussels, Belgium this year. Brockman will speak about the installation at the Prevention Summit. ADVOCACY DAY

On Feb. 7, legislators, media, and all members of the public are invited to attend all Advocacy Day events at 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Kansas Capitol.

At 11-11:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Kansas Capitol’s rotunda, KCSDV will hold the KCSDV Silent Witness Dedication Ceremony, which is an annual commemorative event that remembers and recognizes Kansans who lost their lives through sexual and domestic violence.

Speakers on the agenda include:

• KCSDV Executive Director Joyce Grover
• A family member of two women in the Silent Witness Display Project on the impact of sexual and domestic violence on victims and their families
• Kansas Representative Gail Finney on the impacts of sexual and domestic violence on Kansas communities
• Wichita Family Crisis Center Executive Director Angela Lampe on sexual and domestic violence services in Kansas

The Silent Witness Display Project will show on the second and first floors of the rotunda. The project shares stories of murdered Kansans, pairing their written stories with silhouettes that symbolize them.

“These powerful stories exemplify why our Kansas communities need sexual and domestic violence services,” Grover said. “Thank you to the families, who generously shared their loved ones’ stories with us to help increase awareness about the widespread, public health problems of sexual and domestic violence.”

On the first floor of the rotunda, KCSDV coalition members, representing sexual and domestic violence direct service provider organizations, will have information about their programs’ work and the sexual and domestic violence services available to residents of Kansas communities.
