Topeka, KS – KCSDV has been a part of ongoing meetings with the Kansas Department of Corrections officials to address the sexual safety of the women at the Topeka Correctional Facility (TCF). However, at this time, implementation of suggested programming has not occurred.
Nonetheless, KCSDV is extremely troubled by a report recently released by the US Department of Justice regarding TCF. The report concludes that “TCF fails to protect women prisoners from harm due to sexual abuse and misconduct from correctional staff and other prisoners in violation of their constitutional rights.”
KCSDV promotes the belief that all women have the basic human right to be free from rape, sexual abuse, and sexual coercion.
We hope that with the impetus from these findings, TCF will develop the facility-wide culture and much-needed programming that provides a safe space for victims to disclose abuse and addresses the long-term impact of trauma that many of the women at TCF have experienced.
No woman deserves to be raped or sexually assaulted, no matter where she is.
