Advanced Sexual Assault Nurse Exam (SANE)/Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Training
Audience: Healthcare professionals (APRN, RN, LPN), SANEs, physicians, physician assistants, law enforcement, prosecutors, victim advocates, mental health professionals, and other professionals who work with victims of sexual assault.
KCSDV is approved as a provider of continuing nursing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. This course offering is approved for 6.5 (pending approval) contact hours applicable for APRN, RN, or LPN relicensure. Kansas State Board of Nursing provider number: LT0291-0914.
KCSDV continues to monitor the situation with COVID-19 and will make adjustments, as necessary. Registrants will be notified of any changes. We will follow CDC KDHE guidelines at this training to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Training Description
This training will provide participants with evidence-based strategies for enhancing SANE practice including pediatric medical forensic examination: essentials for the forensic nurse, physical abuse, pediatric strangulation, and preparation for courtroom testimony.
Objectives
- Identify historical indicators of physical abuse.
- Recognize features of bruise injuries that raise concern for physical abuse.
- Examine diagnostic testing recommended for children presenting with specific injuries.
- Prepare of reporting concerns for physical abuse to child protective services.
- Verbalize role as a SANE in legal proceedings.
- Understand the difference between fact and expert witness testimony.
- Discuss preparation for trial.
- Increase knowledge of the importance of timely and thorough collaborative assessment, treatment, and documentation of pediatric patients who have or may have experienced strangulation.

Forensic Nursing Specialist
International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN)
Karen D. Carroll has been a licensed Registered Nurse for over 40 years. Karen is currently the Forensic Nursing Specialist at the International Association of Forensic Nurses. Ms. Carroll graduated in 1997 from Columbia University. Karen provides expert witness testimony in court cases on the topics of sexual assault, forensic examiner programs, and her personal experience as a survivor of marital rape. Ms. Carroll has extensively presented throughout the United States, in Kenya, Jordan, and Columbia.
Gail Horner, DNP, CPNP, SANE-P
Forensic Nursing Specialist
International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN)
Gail Horner is a forensic nursing specialist with the International Association of Forensic Nurses. Gail has practiced for over 25 years as a child abuse pediatric nurse practitioner in a hospital-based child advocacy center while also coordinating a pediatric sexual assault nurse examiner program in the pediatric Emergency Department. Gail has authored over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters.
