Advocate Skill-Building Series: Written Correspondence and Phone Calls with Incarcerated Survivors
Audience: KCSDV Member Program Advocates and Staff Only
Sponsored by:
Contact with advocates can be a lifeline for incarcerated survivors. However, methods of contact are often limited, especially during the pandemic. Two of the most common ways that incarcerated survivors reach out to advocates are through written correspondence and phone calls. However, these methods of communication bring unique challenges, especially around confidentiality. During this training we will discuss how to maintain confidentiality and support incarcerated survivors through effective correspondence and phone calls.
Safety Planning in a Correctional Environment is part of a series to enhance advocacy skills when working with incarcerated survivors. More training opportunities in the series will be posted at www.kcsdv.org/train when they become available.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the impact of correspondence and phone calls on justice-impacted survivors.
- Recognize barriers to confidentiality.
- Examine strategies to develop effective forms of communication.
