Working with Deaf Survivors and Interpreters: Providing Culturally Relevant and Deaf-Centered Services

During this series, DeafLEAD will address Deaf culture, working with Deaf survivors of trauma, and working with interpreters to increase accessibility, service capacity, and safety for Deaf survivors of sexual and domestic violence and their families.
Based in Missouri, DeafLEAD has served Deaf, DeafBlind, hard of hearing, and late-deafened victims of varying crimes and their families for over 25 years. They are the only organization in the United States providing statewide direct services to Deaf, DeafBlind, hard of hearing, and late-deafened victims of crime. DeafLEAD trains service providers, such as first responders, law enforcement, victim service agencies, shelters, mental health professionals, and courts, all over the country to ensure that the Deaf individuals and families in their local communities are receiving culturally and language appropriate services.
Part 1 – Deaf Culture 101

Assisting a Deaf victim/survivor presents unique challenges to service providers. There is a myriad of complex barriers to address before a Deaf survivor can successfully access services. The DeafLEAD team will share tips on tackling these barriers and provide solutions on resolving them. Communication and the flow and understanding of communication is key to being able to work through the challenges facing Deaf survivors. Access to appropriate communication is often overlooked within the service structure, but it is paramount to providing quality services. This session will address some of the unique situations that Deaf survivors encounter as well as how to best work with an advocate for the Deaf to make your environment accessible and better equipped to assist them.

Communication is vital for Deaf and Hard of Hearing survivors who are trying to access victim services. This session will focus on how to effectively use interpreters as well as what a trauma-informed approach looks like when working with Deaf survivors.
