Evidence Collection in the Emergency Department: Medical-Forensic Care of the Sexual Assault Patient
Audience: Hospital Emergency Department Personnel, Physicians, Licensed Physician Assistants, Registered Professional Nurses and KCSDV Member Program Advocates & staff only

Course Description:
K.S.A. 65-448 requires physicians who are on call or on duty at medical care facilitates in Kansas to perform sexual assault evidence collection. Licensed Physician Assistants and Registered Professionals Nurses may also perform these exams, but they must be specially trained in performing sexual assault evidence collection.
This course provides specialized training on performing sexual assault evidence collection, as well as working with the sexual assault patient. This course provides an overview of the trauma-informed, victim-centered framework for working with sexual assault patients, medical screening and preparing for the sexual assault exam and evidence collection, the medical forensic exam process, strategies to identify special circumstances, mandatory reporting requirements, and review of chain of custody and evidence transfer.
Learning Objectives:
Trauma-Informed, Victim Centered Framework
- Recognize how to provide a trauma-informed and victim-centered response
- Understand the effects of sexual assault trauma
- Apply the principles of trauma-informed care to medical practice
- Understand the effects of vicarious trauma and the importance of self-care
Mandatory Reporting, Medical Screening & Preparing for the Sexual Assault Exam
- Recognize sexual violence as a healthcare issue
- Explore Kansas law applicable to sexual assault exams and evidence collection
- Review Triage, Medical Screening and providing choices to the patient
- Discuss sexual assault evidence collection time frames
- Prepare to perform evidence collection in the ED
The Medical Forensic Exam Process
- Review the process for head to toe and detailed genital examinations for males and females
- Describe how to use the Kansas Bureau of Investigation sexual assault evidence collection kit
- Discuss STI and pregnancy prophylaxis vs. testing
- Identify special circumstances such as non-law enforcement reported exams, drug or alcohol evidence collection, suspect examinations and pediatric examinations
- Recognize the importance of discharge and safety planning
- Review chain of custody and evidence transfer
- Discuss preparing for and delivery of court testimony
- Describe resources for starting a SANE program
