Legal Basics and Online Resources
Audience: KCSDV Member Program Advocates and Staff Only
Sponsored by:
Join the KCSDV Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV) staff and increase your knowledge of legal basics. Because many survivors need or request assistance with legal matters, it is crucial to understand the difference between civil and criminal law and essential legal proceedings. However, while advocates support survivors, advocates must maintain boundaries and avoid any unauthorized practice of law. During this training, advocates will learn how to help clients navigate the civil and criminal justice systems while providing advocacy and support. In addition to providing an overview on the difference between giving legal advice and legal information, KCSDV LAV staff will review several legal resources, including the LAV Project, KCSDV website, and Kansas Legal Services website.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the general difference between civil and criminal law
- Understand civil lawsuit proceedings
- Recognize the difference between providing legal advice and legal information
