Training Description:

Protection orders can be a powerful safety tool for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Applying for a protection order can be a step towards independence, but it is only one piece of a comprehensive safety plan and is not a safe option for all survivors.  By attending this training child welfare professionals will learn how someone can file a protection order in Kansas, as well as how protection orders can increase safety for some survivors while increasing danger for others.  Participants will be provided information on how they can support survivors when filing for a protection order, including how domestic and sexual violence advocacy programs can assist both survivors and child welfare professionals in the protection order process.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the different options for filing a protection order application in Kansas.
  • Describe how domestic and sexual violence advocates can assist survivors in the protection order process.
  • Explain how protection orders can be a safety tool for some survivors.
  • Identify the ways in which protection orders can increase danger for some survivors.
  • Identify the unique considerations and requirements for obtaining a protection order for minors in Kansas.
  • Describe how child welfare professionals and domestic and sexual violence advocates can work collaboratively to support survivors seeking protection orders.
