Description:

Has it been more than 1 to 2 years since you’ve attended a 40-hr SANE-SART Course?  Have you been thinking about how to incorporate more self-care into your daily practice?  Has it been a while since you’ve had the opportunity to connect with other SANEs in Kansas?  If so, this professional development opportunity is for you!  Join us for this unique opportunity to refresh on recent changes and best practices related to sexual assault exams in Kansas, and to refresh yourself.

Objectives:

  • Identify new and emerging best practices for SANEs in Kansas.
  • Describe updates to the KBI Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit.
  • Recognize methods on how to improve and sustain SANE program coordination.
  • Understand ways to incorporate self-care into your personal life and professional practice.
  • Network with other Kansas SANEs for peer development.

KCSDV is approved as a provider of continuing nursing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. This course offering has been approved for contact hours applicable for APRN, RN, or LPN relicensure.

Jessica Albers is a board certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. She has been the SANE/SART Clinical Coordinator at HaysMed, part of the University of Kansas Health System, for the past 7 years. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center- Lincoln in 2000 and earned a Master of Forensic Science from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2004. Jessica serves on the Ellis County SANE/SART Advisory Board and is a past President of the Kansas Chapter of International Association of Forensic Nurses. Jessica represented the Kansas Chapter of IAFN on the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) Sexual Assault Kit Initiative multidisciplinary working group and was instrumental in updating the KBI Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit to reflect current best practice and evidence-based recommendations. She has assisted with the development of SANE programs in Kansas and provides training for SANEs across the state.

Karen Groot, RN, SANE-A SANE-P
Forensic Nursing Services Coordinator
Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC)

Karen Groot is currently the coordinator of Forensic Nursing Services at Salina Regional Health Center.  She has been a forensic nurse since 2003.  Karen has been a Certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for Adults/Adolescents/Pediatrics since 2008.  SRHC serves a very large section of central Kansas, and are the primary providers for pediatric sexual abuse in the area.  In 2016, SRHC expanded its services in forensics to include strangulation, child abuse, elder abuse, domestic and interpersonal violence, sex trafficking, gunshot wounds and suspect exams.
