Part 1 – Supporting Incarcerated Transgender Individuals

Tuesday, August 3, 2021
1:00 – 2:30 p.m. CST

Transgender individuals are disproportionately incarcerated and are especially vulnerable to sexual violence and harassment within correctional facilities. The PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) standards include protections for this population. In this session, we will talk about the unique barriers faced by incarcerated transgender individuals and the critical role advocates play in providing support.

As a result of this training, participants will be better able to:

  • Examine how trauma impacts healing for transgender survivors who are incarcerated.
  • Discuss why transgender individuals face higher rates of incarceration.
  • Examine how PREA standards aim to provide protection to this population.
  • Discuss how advocates can provide support during and post-incarceration.

This session will provide attendees with essential information about the lived experiences of transgender survivors. Participants can expect to increase their understanding in several key areas including, violence against transgender individuals, barriers, lack of statistics, shelter accessibility, and how DV/SA programs can improve system-generated harm caused by anti-transgender violence. In addition, this session will provide a foundation for participants to help increase their capacity to build and improve programmatic policies and practices that reflects the lived realities of transgender survivors. This session is a prerequisite for the session on August 27, 2021.

As a result of this training, participants will be better able to:

  • Identify three barriers to receiving services and support for transgender survivors.
  • Name two statistics that show the disproportionate impact of sexual violence on transgender individuals.
  • List two practical things any advocate can implement (now) to reduce barriers and support healing.

This engagement-based session will center around several key goals including, generating plans (policies, practices, and solutions) for building authentic, welcoming environments, eliminating all programmatic barriers, and developing outreach and equity-based partnerships with transgender communities in their service area. To attend this session, participants must attend the session on August 10, 2021.

As a result of this training, participants will be better able to:
